The Oscar Awards are considered to be one of the most prestigious, if not the most prestigious, awards show.

Every year, thousands of people tune in to see what cinematic film will be given an award. Right now, with the Oscars just a few months away, many people have begun to predict what films will be nominated for the different categories at this awards show.

This year, 9 movies were predicted to be nominated for the infamous Best Picture category.

However, the movies that were predicted were different than previous years. Due to the COVID-19, almost all of the movies predicted were on streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime.

According to variety.com, the top prediction for this year’s Best Picture award goes to Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, which stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gorden-Levitt, and many more.

This is a historical film that tackles the events that happened during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. This movie was highly praised, getting a whopping 89% on the tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critic Brian Grill said that The Trial of the Chicago 7 was “the perfect material and cast for Sorkin and one of the strongest ensemble performances of the year.”

The runner-up nomination, according to Variety, Nomadland by Searchlight Pictures. This film stars Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, Linda May, Swankie, & Bob Wells and is about an old woman who embarks on a journey through the American West after losing everything during the Great Recession. This film did insanely well with critics as well, earning a 94% on the Tomatometer.

Top Rotten Tomatoes critic, Nick Schager, said that “Zhao’s film is a poetic Malickian ode to the pioneering nature of the restless American Spirit.”

The Oscars are set to be hosted on April 25, 2021 at 5:00 PM PST. There will likely be no host this year, as the Oscars has not had a host for the past two years.
