Previously, on October 21st, Alec Baldwin, a famous actor, accidentally shot and killed the film director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, and injured the director, Joel Souza. The Santa Fe County sheriffs are currently investigating the matter, and charges have not been made as of yet.

“With firearms, you only get one mistake and somebody’s dead. There’s just no reason to take that risk,” stated Dave Cortese, a member of the Cali Congress. According to nbcnews.com, it is rare for real guns to be used on film sets because of realistic CGI and computer editing, but they are still used by certain film industries. Previously, camera operators and their assistants filed complaints about poor working conditions and inadequate gun inspections. A few weeks prior, Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds after being told that the gun wasn’t loaded; there were no investigation or safety meetings in regards to that incident.

As illustrated by latimes.com, when shooting a gunfight scene, the crew told Baldwin that the gun was “cold”. While the scene was occurring, Hutchins and Souza were checking the monitor for different shots. During the first shot, Baldwin got the gun out of its holster without incident but during the second shot, he made a mistake, and the ammunition went flying towards them, shooting through Hutchin’s shoulder and piercing Souza.

Before a scene is filmed that contains a gun, the armorer, or the person in charge of the gun props, examines the guns to make sure it is unloaded. During the film, the examination was improperly done multiple times and caused the grave incident. The armory staff were not actual professionals, according to deadline.com, they were cheaper to hire because they were not qualified for the job.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic incident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, a mother, and a deeply admired colleague of ours,” stated Baldwin. Charges have not been ruled out for Baldwin or anyone else because they need more information before inferring any statements. However, Baldwin, unless they discover that he behaved irrationally or irresponsibly, will most likely not face criminal charges because he was not aware that the gun was loaded. There could possibly be a manslaughter prosecution for the members who loaded the gun or knew the gun was loaded.
