On March 2nd, 2022, Alta Loma High School Track and Field had their first meet of the season. It was a dual meet that took place at Ayala High School, meaning that Ayala was the only other high school that Alta Loma was competing against. The first race took place at 3:30 PM. This race was a 4×100 meter relay. This just means that a team of four athletes from each school run 100 meters each, passing the baton to the next teammate at each interval. There were lots of different running events, such as the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter. There was also a longer relay race, in which each member of the relay team ran 400 meters, or an entire lap around the track, each.

“I liked how there were different opportunities to try new things at the track event.” said Irelynn Nelson, freshman and athlete on the Alta Loma High School Track and Field team.

The Ayala High School Track and Field team is a very accomplished set of young athletes. Their Cross Country team placed second in the division, so these runners definitely knew what they were doing. They unfortunately were able to beat Alta Loma in most of the events and win the meet as a whole. However, Alta Loma was able to take several events. These were mostly the distance running and field events.

“As soon as I pushed off the blocks, the only thing my mind was set on was to run as fast as I could. The realization that I was first made me feel shocked, but I take pride in it,” said Annya Rodriguez, a freshman girl who placed first in her heat of the 100-meter dash.
