Social media has birthed many amazing opportunities for countless individuals but the vanity aspect of social media has also cost many. Each day apps like instagram, snapchat, etc are coming out with hundreds of face filters that change your features in order to look a certain way. This reality for younger children who have access to social media can be incredibly dangerous for their self esteem and perception of self.

“In it, the researchers explain that clients no longer come to the surgery to look more like their celebrity reference but instead claim to be closer to their own image captured through a filter. Within this new logic, the new operations most in demand are related to correcting facial asymmetry, drooping of the eyelids, the appearance of wrinkles, and the nose’s appearance. There has also been a significant increase in the demand for lip augmentation to get closer to that image, which can be achieved in a matter of seconds through a filter.” writes Fadoua Soussi from the blog Invisible lines.

These filters that automatically use technology to “beautify” your face based on society’s standards of what we consider beautiful give people the thought to change their appearance to match what they’re seeing in the filter. This cycle of constantly trying to improve one’s appearance based on what an app can do in seconds through a camera is unethical and damaging to mental health. It can become harder to detach from the image of the filtered face in your head, just to look in the mirror and see a different picture.
