Urban Dictionary in our culture

Javier Arredondo, Editor

The Urban Dictionary is an incredibly useful tool now, and any other possible time period it could have existed in before. For those who do not know what it is, it is an online dictionary in which you can type in specifically slang words, and anyone can give you a definition of this word. Slang has been around as long as language has, however, the internet has not.

Urban Dictionary, or UD for short, was invented in 1999. Similar to wikipedia, anyone can log onto  Urban Dictionary and upload a definition for a slang word they feel some might not know. The tool is especially useful for old people who want to understand kids these days.

However, it should be noted that this is not necessarily an appropriate website, as not all slang terms are appropriate. It is useful for teenagers trying to keep up with trends and adults understanding what words the youngins nowadays are saying, but not for children. Be warned, if you have a younger sibling, do not let them use this site as they may stumble across a very bad word and ask you some difficult questions.

Overall however, it is a useful tool for the world.

“It helped me learn internet slang I never would have known,” said Nathan Smith, junior. He also talked about it’s contribution to the internet. “I feel like it’s contributing to the internet because it’s basically an archive of all the internet’s past terms and basically keeping track of history. It allows other people on there and then to know words that they probably wouldn’t have known regularly.”
